Safferman, Robert S. (Robert A. Taft Sanitary Engineering Center, Cincinnati, Ohio), and Mary-Ellen Morris. Growth characteristics of the blue-green algal virus LPP- 1. J. Bacteriol. 88:771-775. 1964.-The blue-green algal (BGA) virus, strain LPP-1, formed two distinct plaque variants. During subsequent propagation, each of the isolated variants eventually reverted to a mixture of both plaque types. The large-plaque-former, multiplying at a somewhat faster rate, showed maximal virus production within 60 hr after infection; maximal titer of the small-plaque mutant was reached after a 76-hr incubation period. No differences were observed in either their host spectra or their pH and thermal stability. Evidence was presented which demonstrated that BGA virus samples could be assayed with reasonable accuracy from plaque counts. Variations resulting from this plating technique were within the range of experimental error that has been generally reported for such a system.

Coevolution of a virus-alga system.
Plectonema boryanum, a filamentous blue-green alga, was cloned and then allowed to reach a steady state in a quasi-continuous culture in the presence of the algal virus, LPP-1. The culture was maintained for 3.5-month period during which time at least four distinct culture lysings were evident. After the fourth lysis the culture reached a steady-state level which was identical in its algal co...
متن کاملStudy of soil blue-green algae and their effect on seed germination and plant growth of vegetable crops
Nitrogen fixation blue-green algae make a major contribution to the fertility of soil. It has been suggested that blue-green algae (BGA) assist higher plant growth by supplying growth substances. There are numerous works about roles of blue-green algae in paddy soils and rice growth but little on other plants. In this research, 19 morphospecies belonging to three families of heterocystous and n...
متن کاملLPP-1 infection of the blue-green alga Plectonema boryanum. I. Electron microscopy.
One-step growth and intracellular growth experiments were performed at high multiplicities of the virus LPP-1 during the infection of the blue-green alga Plectonema boryanum. The eclipse period lasts until 4 hr after infection, the latent period terminates at 6 hr, and the rise period continues until 14 to 16 hr after infection. The burst size was independent of multiplicity of infection over t...
متن کاملBlue-green algal inhibition of diatom growth: transition from mesotrophic to eutrophic community structure.
Cell-free filtrates of axenic or bacterized cultures of the dominant blue-green algae from a freshwater lake inhibited the growth of diatoms isolated from the same lake. Lake waters, collected during blue-green algal blooms, also inhibited diatom growth. In situ observations over a 5-year period indicate that diatom bloom populations vary inversely with the levels of the preceding blue-green al...
متن کاملA taxonomic study of blue-green algae based on morphological, physiological and molecular characterization in Yazd province terrestrial ecosystems (Iran)
Based on the limited resources available to algal flora in Yazd province in the center of Iran, cultivation, purification and identification of soil algae from seven sites was performed in summer 2013. The soil samples were processed for analysis of Cd, Pb contents. The present paper attempts to analyze survey of soil blue-green algal identification in different types of stations, using morphol...
